On Thursday 12th January, the APPG for Education hosted Jason Gould from The Education Company, to present his research on the financial efficacy of Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs).

Inquiry roundtable discussion on STEM education
On 22nd November 2016, the APPG for Education hosted the third and final discussion in a series of roundtable events as part of its inquiry in to how well British schools are preparing young people for their future careers.
The roundtable focused on what is required to increase the uptake of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, the so called STEM subjects, as well as how to increase the number and quality of STEM teachers and possible ways to transform the gendered nature of STEM subjects to encourage more female uptake. The discussion was chaired by Carol Monaghan MP, a former physics teacher and the SNP’s Westminster Education Spokesperson.

Inquiry roundtable discussion on careers education and guidance
On the 19th October, the APPG for Education hosted the second in a series of roundtable events as part of its inquiry in to how well British schools are preparing young people for their future careers. The roundtable focused on the availability, quality and effectiveness of current careers advice and guidance students receive from their schools. The debate was chaired by Andrea Jenkyns MP and the guests ranged from leaders in industry, to teachers and principals, Ofsted and career guidance counsellors.

Inquiry roundtable discussion on soft skills
On the 13th October, the first of a series of three roundtable discussions took place in Parliament. The session focused on the balance between subject knowledge and softer skills and the debate was chaired by Danny Kinahan MP, Chair of the APPG for Education. Participants ranged from teachers and academics to parents and employers, and included: the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the British Council, the Institute of Education, Capita, the Institute of Customer Service, National Citizen Service Trust, the National Literacy Trust and the Parents’ Union, several universities and the Times Educational Supplement.

APPG for Education addressed by Sir David Carter, National Schools Commissioner
On Tuesday 6th September, the APPG for Education hosted Sir David Carter, the National Schools Commissioner. Sir David provided the Group with his thoughts on the development of academies policy and an update on the work of Regional Schools Commissioners.

APPG for Education Annual Lunch 2016
On 15th March 2016, the APPG for Education held its Annual Lunch, with guest speaker Neil Carmichael MP, Chair of the Education Select Committee.
The Lunch was an opportunity for members of the Group to reflect on the APPG’s work since the 2015 Election. Attendees included Danny Kinahan MP, the Group’s Chairman, Andrea Jenkyns MP, the Group’s Vice Chair, Flick Drummond MP, Lord Boswell of Aynho and Baroness Hooper. They were joined by education sector stakeholders who have contributed to the work of the Group over the last year.

The impact of the classroom environment on educational attainment
On Tuesday 9th February, the APPG for Education hosted Professor Peter Barrett of Salford University as the key note speaker at a meeting on the impact of the classroom environment on educational attainment. Professor Barrett presented the findings of his research and suggested possible policy implications of his report, entitled “Clever Classrooms”. APPG for Education addressed by Sir Michael Wilshaw, HM’s Chief Inspector of Education,Children’s Services and Skills
On Tuesday 15th December 2015, the APPG for Education hosted Sir Michael Wilshaw, HM Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills, for an update on the work of Ofsted and a lively question and answer session.

Meeting on the usefulness of the term “Coasting Schools”
In the second meeting of the new Parliament, the APPG for Education was delighted to host Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for Schools, and Dame Vicki Paterson, Executive Headteacher of the Brindishe Schools, a federation of three state primary schools in London, for a discussion on the usefulness of the term ‘coasting schools’.
